SUSTAINABILITY

It’s our responsibility tocarry it into a brightand prosperous future, overcoming the challenges we face as people and planet, so that we can keep enjoying great coffee beyond tomorrow.

Sustainable Sourcing

Founded in 2019, Usingini Upland Coffee produces organic Arabica coffee at an elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level and owns a 50-hectare farm in Malawi’s northern highlands. The forest-friendly company uses an outgrower model that sources quality coffee beans from more than 1,200 farmers living in areas adjacent to national forest reserves. Usingini Upland Coffee is certified through the Malawi Bureau of Standards. In 2023, Usingini tripled its monthly production from 300 kg to 1 metric tonne of roasted coffee. GROWING WITH DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS In 2022, Usingini began partnering with the USAID and UKaid co-funded Modern Cooking for Healthy Forests (MCHF) project to expand the company’s outgrower network to more smallholder coffee farmers in northern and central Malawi. With support from MCHF, Usingini has expanded its footprint in Malawi.

Usingini: Committed to Ethical Sourcing

Usingini prioritizes responsible sourcing practices to ensure every cup of their coffee or tea contributes to a positive future. They believe true responsibility extends beyond simply reaching goals. Instead, they actively engage with coffee and tea farmers in their sourcing regions. This allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by these communities. Usingini then invests in solutions to address these issues and drive progress. Understanding and appreciating the rich diversity in their sourcing regions is important to Usingini. This is why they’ve developed a special Responsible Sourcing program. This program specifically considers the unique needs of different coffee and tea origins, encompassing the millions of smallholder farmers and workers involved. This commitment is evident in both their sourcing strategy and the various farmer development programs they’ve established.
